A Day at our Nation's Capital

The day of May 28, 2008, proved to be a glorious day to walk around our nation's capital. Mike's best friend Jeremy and his wife Megan flew out to stay with us for a week over the Memorial Day holiday. They wanted to spend at least one of their days here walking around Washington, DC, and taking in the sights.

So with Catelyn in tow, we set off for the big city to show our friends a good time. Not only was it their first time seeing the monuments, but it was Catelyn's first time as well. Another "first" to cross off of her list!

We walked the entire round of monuments -- starting right in the center of it all with the Washington Monument. We then walked to the White House (as seen below), the Vietnam Memorial (also below), the World War II Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Korean Memorial, the Roosevelt Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. It was a long walk to see all of the monuments, but we did it in a couple of hours and had a lot of fun along the way. We stopped at one of the countless food stands that lined the busy streets and had hot dogs and ice cream for lunch. Catelyn enjoyed both of these staples that you just have to get when you're "doing the DC thing." We saw lots of geese and ducks along the way and Catelyn even picked some flowers at one of our stops.

We met up with my brother Will at the Iwo Jima Memorial (last photo) at the end of the day and went to a local Irish pub by his apartment building for dinner. And boy was it yummy! All in all it was a perfect day and a beautiful reminder of how lucky we are to live in this country.
